GROUND MOVEMENT MONITORING
ABS Inclinometer Casings
GEOLUR supplies ABS inclinometer casing systems for boreholes, diaphragm walls, retaining structures, slopes, tunnels and horizontal ground-movement monitoring worldwide.
PRODUCT OVERVIEW
A stable reference path for measuring ground and structural movement.
ABS inclinometer casing is a grooved access casing installed in, attached to, or embedded within ground and structural elements so inclinometer probes or in-place inclinometer sensors can follow a repeatable measurement path. As the surrounding ground or structure deforms, the casing moves with it, allowing successive surveys to be compared and displacement profiles to be developed.
Measurement reference
The casing is not itself the inclinometer sensor. Its internal guide grooves provide the controlled path and orientation required by a compatible probe or in-place inclinometer system.
Engineering projects
Applications include geotechnical engineering, civil works, transport infrastructure, retaining systems, slopes, embankments, tunnels and water-related infrastructure where movement monitoring is required.
Specification-based sourcing
GEOLUR supplies ABS inclinometer casing systems worldwide and reviews project requirements such as installation orientation, casing dimensions, joints, accessories, quantities and delivery destination before quotation.
ENGINEERING APPLICATIONS
One casing system. Multiple ground-movement applications.
ABS inclinometer casings are used where engineers need repeatable displacement profiles through soil, rock, fills, retaining systems or structural elements.
Borehole Inclinometers
Installed in vertical or inclined boreholes to monitor lateral ground movement, identify deformation zones and establish how displacement changes with depth.
Horizontal Inclinometers
Horizontal casing can support deformation or settlement profiling where the monitoring objective requires measurement along a near-horizontal alignment.
Retaining Walls
Used to monitor wall movement and lateral deformation in excavations, basements, piled walls, sheet-pile systems and other retaining structures.
Diaphragm Walls
Casing may be incorporated into or attached to diaphragm-wall monitoring arrangements so deflection can be assessed as excavation progresses.
Slopes & Embankments
Suitable for movement profiling in slopes, landslide-prone ground and engineered fills where the depth and progression of deformation are important.
Tunnels & Excavations
Used around tunnelling and deep excavation works to understand ground response and the movement of nearby retaining or structural elements.
HOW IT WORKS
The casing moves. The probe measures the change.
A compatible inclinometer probe or in-place inclinometer follows the internal guide grooves of the casing. Repeated measurements are compared over time to determine how the casing profile — and therefore the monitored ground or structure — has changed.
TECHNICAL SPECIFICATION
Define the casing around the monitoring system — not the other way around.
GEOLUR supplies different ABS inclinometer casing configurations. Exact dimensions and connection details depend on the selected product model and project requirement. Values are therefore confirmed at quotation stage rather than copied from unrelated manufacturers.

ENGINEERING SELECTION GUIDE
What should be reviewed before choosing ABS inclinometer casing?
Installation orientation
Confirm whether the installation is vertical, inclined or horizontal. The orientation affects the measurement objective, installation procedure and compatible survey system.
Monitoring depth
Deep installations increase the importance of joint integrity, casing handling, installation loads, groove continuity and long-term access.
Probe compatibility
Confirm the required clear internal diameter and groove geometry against the portable inclinometer probe or in-place inclinometer that will actually be used.
Expected movement
Settlement, heave and large deformation may affect whether telescopic or other movement-accommodating details should be considered.
Site environment
Groundwater chemistry, temperature, construction sequence, grout exposure and structural integration should be reviewed against the selected product’s technical documentation.
Project specification
Contract drawings, instrumentation specifications and employer/consultant requirements take precedence over generic product descriptions. GEOLUR can review supplied requirements before quotation.
INSTALLATION & CONNECTIONS
Installation quality is part of measurement quality.
The following points are general engineering considerations. The installation manual supplied with the selected casing system and the project instrumentation specification should always govern the final procedure.
Borehole installation
Maintain the required casing orientation, protect internal grooves from debris, assemble joints without damaging the casing, and control the installation so casing geometry is preserved. Grouting or backfilling details should follow the project design and selected system instructions.
Diaphragm wall / concrete installation
Where casing is cast into or fixed to structural elements, the casing alignment, restraint arrangement and protection during reinforcement and concreting works should be coordinated before installation.
Horizontal installation
Horizontal inclinometer systems have a different measurement objective from conventional vertical surveys. Confirm sensor/probe compatibility, control points, alignment and the expected settlement or deformation mode before selecting the casing configuration.
Joint alignment and sealing
Connections should preserve groove continuity and minimise unwanted rotation. Push-fit, coupled, sealed or other connection arrangements depend on the selected casing model. Do not assume every GEOLUR-supplied system uses the same joint design.
Telescopic connections
Telescopic sections may be considered where longitudinal movement, settlement or heave could otherwise impose undesirable loading on the casing. Their use should be coordinated with the expected movement range and selected monitoring system.
SYSTEM COMPONENTS
Casing is only one part of the installation.
Couplings
Connection options depend on the selected casing family and may include conventional, push-fit or other system-specific coupling arrangements.
Telescopic Sections
Available for selected systems where project geometry and expected settlement or heave justify movement accommodation.
Caps & Protection
Bottom caps, top caps, protective covers and related installation accessories can be reviewed against the project requirement.
QA/QC & PROCUREMENT

STANDARDS & TECHNICAL CONTEXT
Inclinometer casing should be considered within the complete monitoring method.
One important international reference is ISO 18674-3:2017, Geotechnical investigation and testing — Geotechnical monitoring by field instrumentation — Part 3: Measurement of displacements across a line: Inclinometers . The ISO standard addresses inclinometer measurement for geotechnical monitoring rather than serving as a generic product certification for every ABS casing.
The standard was reviewed and confirmed in 2023 and remains current, with Amendment 1:2020 also published. Project specifications may additionally reference local or client-specific requirements.
GEOLUR does not describe a supplied casing as “ISO certified”, “ASTM certified” or otherwise approved unless the specific product documentation supports that claim.

FAQ
ABS inclinometer casing — common engineering and procurement questions.
What is ABS inclinometer casing?
It is a grooved access casing used with compatible inclinometer probes or in-place inclinometers. The casing follows movement of the surrounding ground or structure, while repeated measurements are used to develop displacement profiles.
Why does inclinometer casing have internal grooves?
The grooves guide the wheels or alignment elements of the monitoring probe and help maintain repeatable measurement axes throughout the installed casing.
What sizes of ABS inclinometer casing does GEOLUR supply?
Available dimensions depend on the selected casing model and project requirement. Send GEOLUR the specified outside diameter, internal diameter, probe compatibility and total length so the available configuration can be confirmed.
Can ABS inclinometer casing be installed horizontally?
Horizontal inclinometer systems are used for particular settlement or deformation-monitoring objectives. The casing, probe or sensor system, alignment and reference arrangement should be selected as a complete system.
Can casing be installed in diaphragm walls or retaining structures?
Yes, inclinometer casing is commonly used in retaining and structural monitoring arrangements. The fixing or embedment detail should be coordinated with the structural design, construction sequence and monitoring specification.
What is a telescopic inclinometer coupling?
A telescopic connection allows controlled longitudinal movement between casing sections and may be considered where settlement or heave could otherwise impose unwanted axial effects on the casing.
Is ABS always better than aluminium or other casing materials?
No. ABS is widely used, but material selection should reflect installation depth, mechanical demand, temperature, environment, monitoring equipment and project specification. Some installations may require an alternative casing material.
