Geotechnical Pipe Standards & QA/QC Guide
Technical guidance from GEOLUR on standards, specifications and QA/QC for ABS inclinometer casings, PVC/PVC-U monitoring pipes, PE/HDPE engineering pipes and custom perforated pipe systems.
Engineering Quality
A pipe specification is more than a material name.
For geotechnical monitoring, groundwater wells and instrumentation installations, reliable pipe performance depends on dimensions, material, joint geometry, straightness, groove or slot accuracy, mechanical behaviour and manufacturing consistency. GEOLUR uses these parameters to turn a generic pipe enquiry into a project-ready technical specification.
Define the engineering function
Start with the measurement or hydraulic objective: inclinometer access, groundwater monitoring, dewatering, recharge, screened intake, drainage or another engineered function.
Identify measurable requirements
Material alone is insufficient. Dimensions, tolerances, joint design, groove geometry, perforation, stiffness and applicable test requirements should be stated where relevant.
Build traceable acceptance criteria
Technical submittals, drawings, inspection records and project-specific certificates can provide a documented basis for procurement and site acceptance.
Standards Framework
Use the right standard for the right engineering function.
There is no single universal standard covering every ABS, PVC/PVC-U, PE/HDPE and perforated pipe used in geotechnical monitoring. Standards operate at different levels: instrumentation methodology, material, dimensions, well construction, testing and project-specific acceptance.
| Reference | Primary Relevance | Typical GEOLUR Context | Important Limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| ISO 18674-3:2017 | Geotechnical monitoring by inclinometers | ABS inclinometer casing and inclinometer-system specifications | It addresses inclinometer monitoring methodology; it should not be represented as a blanket material certification for every casing product. |
| ASTM F480 | Thermoplastic well casing pipe and couplings | PVC/PVC-U groundwater monitoring, well casing and compatible screen/casing applications | Applicability depends on pipe configuration, dimensions, material and project requirements. |
| ASTM D5092/D5092M | Groundwater monitoring well design and installation practice | Monitoring-well assemblies using casing and screens | This is a well-design and installation practice, not a generic certification for all PVC pipe. |
| ISO / EN / ASTM material standards | Material, dimensions and performance | PVC/PVC-U and PE/HDPE engineering pipe where specified | The exact standard must match the intended service and product configuration. |
| Project Specification | Contract-specific requirements | All GEOLUR product families | Project requirements may be more stringent than a general industry standard. |
ABS Inclinometer Casings
Groove geometry and spiral control directly affect measurement quality.
ABS inclinometer casing is not simply an ABS tube. The casing becomes part of the measurement reference system. Its internal grooves guide the probe, while dimensional consistency, groove alignment, coupling geometry and casing deformation influence the repeatability of inclinometer surveys.
Groove Geometry
Opposing guide grooves should provide a consistent wheel path for the specified probe throughout the casing string.
Spiral / Twist
Rotational change of the grooves with depth can affect measurement axes. Low and controlled spiral is therefore an important casing QA parameter.
Joint Alignment
Couplings should maintain continuity between sections without creating excessive steps, offsets or rotational misalignment.
Structural Integrity
The casing must remain sufficiently open and serviceable under installation, grouting and anticipated ground conditions.
PVC / PVC-U Monitoring Pipes
Groundwater pipe QA/QC must consider the complete well assembly.
PVC and PVC-U pipes used for groundwater monitoring, standpipes, piezometers, recharge or dewatering applications should be evaluated as casing-and-screen systems rather than as isolated pipe sections.
Dimensions & Mechanical Performance
Outside diameter, inside diameter, wall thickness, SDR or schedule where applicable, pipe stiffness and installation loads should correspond to the intended service.
Connection Integrity
Flush-threaded or other specified connections should maintain continuity and resist unintended separation or leakage under the expected installation conditions.
Hydraulic Interface
Slot size, slot consistency, open area, screen length and compatibility with the filter pack or formation should be defined from the groundwater-monitoring objective.
PE / HDPE Engineering Pipes
Material strength is only one part of HDPE acceptance.
PE/HDPE can provide toughness, corrosion resistance and installation flexibility for selected dewatering, recharge, groundwater and environmental applications. QA/QC should also consider resin designation, dimensions, SDR, joining method and the service conditions of the project.
Material Identification
Specify the required PE grade or material designation where the project standard requires it. Avoid accepting an undefined description such as “HDPE pipe” when performance depends on resin and pipe class.
Dimensional Verification
OD, wall thickness, SDR and length should be checked against the approved drawing, project specification or applicable dimensional standard.
Connection Control
Butt fusion, electrofusion, threaded or mechanical arrangements require different inspection criteria. The selected connection should correspond to installation access and the engineering function.
Custom Perforated Pipes
Custom perforation requires dimensional QA, not visual acceptance alone.
Slots and perforations change both hydraulic behaviour and pipe strength. GEOLUR therefore recommends defining the pattern numerically before manufacturing instead of specifying only “slotted” or “perforated pipe”.
Opening Size
Define slot width or hole diameter and the permitted tolerance where the opening controls soil or filter-pack retention.
Spacing & Pattern
Specify longitudinal and circumferential spacing, number of rows and any staggered or project-specific pattern.
Open Area
Required hydraulic open area should be considered together with structural capacity rather than maximised without limit.
Finished Quality
Inspect for excessive burrs, blocked openings, deformation, cracking and other manufacturing defects that could affect installation or hydraulic performance.
Inspection Logic
Inspect what affects field performance.
An effective inspection plan separates critical characteristics from cosmetic ones. GEOLUR recommends establishing acceptance criteria before production or shipment whenever a project requires formal QA/QC.
Incoming Material
Verify the specified material, identification, relevant supplier documentation and project-required traceability before fabrication.
Dimensional Inspection
Measure critical OD, ID, wall thickness, length, coupling geometry, slots or other project-defined dimensions using suitable calibrated equipment.
Functional Inspection
Check joint fit, casing continuity, groove alignment, screen openings or other characteristics that determine whether the assembly performs its intended function.
Final Release
Confirm quantity, identification, accessories, packaging and required documentation before the batch is released for project delivery.
Documentation
Define the evidence before asking for the certificate.
“Certificate required” is too vague for serious engineering procurement. The purchaser should identify what needs to be demonstrated and which document is expected to demonstrate it.
| Document | Purpose | Typical Content |
|---|---|---|
| Technical Data Sheet | Define the offered product | Material, dimensions, geometry, connections and published performance data |
| Product Drawing | Control project-specific geometry | OD, ID, wall, length, joint, groove, slot or perforation details |
| Certificate of Conformance | Declare conformity to an agreed requirement | Product/batch identification and stated specification or purchase requirement |
| Material Certificate | Provide material-related evidence where available or required | Material designation and relevant supplier/manufacturer information |
| Inspection Record | Record measured characteristics | Dimensions, sample quantity, inspection result and acceptance status |
| Test Report | Document a specified test | Method, sample identification, measured results and acceptance criteria |
| Inspection & Test Plan | Define QA sequence before manufacture | Inspection stages, characteristics, frequency, acceptance criteria and records |

Engineering Judgment
Do not specify standards by copying another project’s BOQ.
Standards are most useful when their scope matches the actual application. A groundwater well casing, an inclinometer casing and a pressure-rated HDPE pipe may all be polymer pipes, but their critical performance characteristics are fundamentally different.
Should ABS inclinometer casing simply be specified as “ISO 18674-3 compliant”?
Does ASTM F480 apply to every PVC pipe?
Should HDPE automatically be specified to a pressure-pipe standard?
Is a mill certificate enough for QA/QC?
