Engineering Pipe Installation Guides

GEOLUR installation guidance for PVC/PVC-U monitoring pipes, ABS inclinometer casings, PE/HDPE well pipes and custom perforated pipes—from storage and assembly to borehole installation, QA/QC and handover.

Installation Guide Hub

Installation quality begins before the pipe enters the borehole.

This GEOLUR resource is a field-planning guide for PVC/PVC-U monitoring and well pipes, ABS inclinometer casings, PE/HDPE engineering pipes and custom perforated pipes. It focuses on alignment, sealing, cleanliness, survivability and future monitoring performance.

Protect

Store straight, clean and supported. Protect ends, threads, grooves and perforations.

Verify

Check product, size, connections, accessories, depth and approved drawings.

Install

Control alignment, joining, lowering, buoyancy and annular materials.

Prove

Record depths, joints, orientation, materials and final functional checks.

Scope: General guidance only. The approved project method statement, designer requirements and exact product manual govern where requirements differ.

Before Installation

Do not open the borehole before the installation system is ready.

Many avoidable failures begin with handling, missing accessories, uncertain depth schedules or incompatible tools.

  • Confirm location, borehole geometry and target depth
  • Verify OD/ID, section length and quantity
  • Check couplings, caps, seals, adapters and tools
  • Prepare an installation/depth schedule
  • Inspect threads, grooves, slots and surfaces
  • Keep interiors free of soil, oil and drilling debris
  • Confirm inclinometer keyway orientation
  • Confirm filter-pack, seal or grout design
  • Check lifting/handling for long flexible pipe
  • Define QA/QC hold points and records
Published Soil Instruments guidance recommends flat storage, an installation schedule and confirmed keyway alignment. AGRU similarly stresses clean transport, full-length support and protection from sharp objects for PE pipe.

ABS Inclinometer Casings

Preserve groove orientation from the first casing to the final survey.

ABS casing is part of the measurement system. Twisted grooves, poor joints, uncontrolled flotation or unsuitable backfill can compromise probe travel and measurement quality.

1. Set Orientation

Establish the required A-axis/keyway direction before the first section is lowered.

2. Join Without Twist

Clean and align joints; use the exact push-fit, lock, coupling, seal or bonding procedure for the supplied system.

3. Lower & Stabilise

Avoid forcing or uncontrolled rotation. Control buoyancy during water/grout placement.

4. Backfill

Use the approved grout/backfill method without floating or distorting the casing.

5. Functional Test

Verify unobstructed probe travel before baseline readings.

Telescopic Sections

Where specified, confirm movement range, location and probe/IPI compatibility.

PVC / PVC-U Monitoring & Well Pipes

Install the screened interval where the groundwater question actually is.

For standpipes, piezometers, monitoring wells, recharge and dewatering wells, screen location, slot size, filter pack, annular seal and well development determine whether the installation represents the intended groundwater zone.

Screen Placement

Confirm screened interval against the borehole log and approved well design.

Filter Interface

Match screen opening and filter material to the approved formation/filter design.

Annular Seal

Place bentonite/grout at specified intervals to limit vertical hydraulic short-circuiting.

Joint Integrity

Keep threads/sockets clean and assemble to the product requirement.

Cleanliness

Cap ends and prevent soil, grease, sawdust or unsuitable adhesives contaminating monitoring wells.

Completion

Protect and identify the headworks; develop/flush the well as specified.

PE / HDPE Engineering Pipes

Control handling, bending and joining before depth makes correction difficult.

PE/HDPE is useful for deep wells and chemically demanding environments, but flexibility and joining require deliberate handling.

Transport & Storage

Support pipe, avoid sharp objects and dragging, and observe product-specific UV/storage limits.

Threaded / Mechanical

Keep sealing surfaces clean, avoid cross-threading and verify assembled dimensions and tensile suitability.

Welded Systems

Where specified, use trained personnel, compatible equipment and the approved fusion procedure.

AGRU guidance emphasises support, clean storage and damage inspection. Royal Eijkelkamp notes HDPE can suit contaminated monitoring locations but also identifies permeability limitations for some contaminants; material choice therefore belongs in design, not field substitution.

Custom Perforated Pipes

Protect the engineered opening pattern all the way to final depth.

Slots and holes are functional geometry. Blocking, crushing, incorrect orientation or a wrong drawing revision can change hydraulic performance.

Verify Revision

Confirm base pipe, slot/hole size, rows, pitch, orientation and screened length.

Protect Openings

Do not drag perforated zones through debris; keep openings clean.

Track Depth

Record top and bottom of every perforated section.

Match Filter

Use the specified filter pack, gauze/geotextile or other interface.

Monitoring, Recharge & Dewatering Wells

A pipe becomes a groundwater system only when the annulus is built correctly.

The completed well must preserve the intended hydraulic connection while isolating zones that should not communicate.

Installation QA/QC

Record what was actually installed — not only what was ordered.

GEOLUR, operated by GeoOrigin Engineering Limited, recommends an as-built installation record from receipt to completion.

Material Receipt

Product, size, quantity, marking and visible condition.

Depth Schedule

Installed lengths, screens, perforations, telescopic sections and final depth.

Orientation

ABS casing keyway/A-axis direction and checks.

Annulus

Filter, bentonite and grout/backfill intervals.

Functional Check

Dummy-probe passage or well checks as applicable.

Handover

As-built drawing, photos, coordinates, datum and completion date.

Regional Installation Conditions

Installation method should respond to climate, ground and construction logistics.

The same product can face different field risks across international markets.

Southeast Asia

Soft ground, groundwater and constrained urban sites increase the importance of borehole stability, casing flotation control and rapid annular placement. GEOUE’s Singapore ERSS material shows the regional relevance of inclinometer and groundwater monitoring around retaining systems.

GEOUE Singapore ERSS context →

Europe

Environmental wells may emphasise low-leaching materials, sealing between strata, traceability and product-specific certification.

Middle East

High solar exposure, long outdoor storage and saline/coastal groundwater increase the importance of storage protection and chemical compatibility.

Regional context does not replace local authority, environmental, drilling, well-construction or site-safety requirements.

Troubleshooting

Stop early when the installation no longer matches the method statement.

ABS casing rotates during lowering
Stop, verify groove orientation and review joint engagement/lowering method before continuing.
Casing wants to float during grouting
Use the approved buoyancy-control method and controlled placement sequence; do not improvise loads that could damage casing.
Dummy probe will not pass a joint
Do not force it. Identify obstruction depth and investigate coupling, burr, groove discontinuity, distortion or debris.
Filter pack bridges above screen
Stop and verify actual pack level rather than assuming calculated volume reached depth.
PE/HDPE pipe is scratched or deformed
Quarantine and assess against applicable product/project acceptance criteria before installation.

Completion & Handover

A good installation ends with an auditable as-built record.

  • Final depth and section schedule
  • Screen/perforated intervals
  • ABS keyway orientation
  • Coupling/telescopic locations
  • Filter/bentonite/grout intervals
  • Head protection and identification
  • Coordinates and reference level
  • Installation photos/material records
  • Functional test result
  • Well development/flushing record
  • Baseline readiness
  • Approved deviations

Installation FAQs

Common field questions for engineering pipe installation.

Should inclinometer casing grooves have a defined direction?
Yes. Confirm the monitoring design before installation and record the as-built orientation.
Can all ABS casing joints be installed the same way?
No. Push-fit, lock, standard coupled and telescopic systems use different joining details.
Why pass a dummy probe?
It verifies unobstructed probe travel before baseline readings; Soil Instruments explicitly recommends this check.
What are major monitoring-well installation risks?
Incorrect screen placement, poor filter placement, inadequate annular sealing, contamination and damaged joints can all make the well unrepresentative.
Can PVC and HDPE always substitute for each other?
No. Mechanical, joining, chemical, adsorption/permeability and certification requirements differ.
Can GEOLUR discuss project-specific installation requirements?
GEOLUR can discuss supplied-product requirements; the responsible designer and contractor remain responsible for the approved installation method and site compliance.
